Film Scanning / Digital Intermediates

A Personalised Approach

Your film is your creative vision.

That's why we provide the greatest attention and care through our guided in-person sessions where we partner 1-2-1 with you through the film scanning and digital intermediate process.

Our scanning suite is a hybrid analog/digital space set within our wider studio and is setup to provide both the comfort and the tools necessary to have productive and thoroughly enjoyable experiences.

We cater for 16mm, Super8, Regular8 and 9.5mm motion picture films.
A Personalised Approach

What to expect

All of our sessions start with a discussion on your creative vision to ensure we fully understand where you are heading which includes a film material review / preparation and a discussion on your scan specification requirements.

We then perform the scan itself which is an active process permitting as much involvement by you as desired. We provide our expertise and experience in helping you achieve your creative vision throughout.

Transcoding is then performed depending on final delivery requirements as are initial grades / look development in Davinci Resolve.

Session Duration / How Long Do I Need?
The required duration of a session depends on many factors that are unique to your project, however the three single biggest variables that impact duration are 1) Film Length 2) Scan Resolution / Quality and 3) One-Light or Scene-to-Scene scan/grade.

For example a single one-light scan of 50ft of Super 8 at 2k 8-bit may take only 15 minutes to physically scan the film.

However, the same film length and resolution with 10 separate scene's on a scene-to-scene scan/grade may take up to an hour as each scene is exposed individually.

Technical Specs

Our principal scanner is the FilmFabriek HDS+ sprocket-less wet gate scanner we've affectionately named Fantas.

Fantas has a maximum sensor size of 5320 x 4600 (24.5mp) at bit depths of 12 (TIFF), 10 (DPX) and 8 (AVI).

Fantas can scan Regular 8mm, Super 8, 16mm + 9.5mm and is able to capture magnetic and optical sound as well as 'wetgate' scan those films that have picked up any scratches through a technique that uses IPA (99.99%) to make scratches appear invisible.

Delivery Formats and File Sizes

We can provide most major delivery formats via Davinci Resolve / Adobe Media Encoder (DNxHR, ProRes, DNG etc)

RAW TIFF/DPX Image Sequences can be extremely large and we recommend / require a fast SSD, preferably an NVME PCIE 3.0 in a USB-C 3.0 or Thunderbolt enclosure.

Our Scanning PC's are equipped with 10-40gbps ports for fast transfers.
